  • Molossians are never attested to be a Greek tribe. They were an Epirotic tribe, of Epirus and viewed by the Greeks themselves as barbarians, which is equivalent to non- Greeks, using their own standarts. Several ancient authors testify, in favour of their non -Greekness, and we might say with a high deegre of confidence, that Hellenes themselves were an Illyrian tribe, established by Bylliones led by Hyllus, the son of Heracles and Melite/ or Deianira.(For the micronation of Molossia, see Republic of Molossia. For the dog type, see Molossus of Epirus.) • The Molossians (Ancient Greek: Μολοσσοί, romanized: Molossoi) were a group of ancient Greek tribes which inhabited the region of Epirus in classical antiquity. Their origin is the subject of debate. Various theories which place them as either ancient Greeks, Illyrians or semi-Hellenized tribes which underwent a process of hellenization since the beginning of classical antiquity, have been argued. Together with the Chaonians and the Thesprotians, they formed the main tribal groupings of the northwestern Greek group in that era. Since the 4th century BC, epigraphic evidence indicates that koine NW Greek and later Attic was used at least as the prestige language of their ruling class as in other tribes of the region. On their northern frontier, they neighbored the Chaonians and on their southern frontier neighbored the kingdom of the Thesprotians. They appear for the first time in historical record in the work of Hecataeus of Miletus (550BC-476BC) and by 370BC formed their own tribal state. For the dog type, see Molossus of Epirus.) (en)
