The lake is filled with saturated salt solution. Mineralization is 200-500 g/l. The water contains Dunaliella salina algae that give a reddish shade to the lake. At the bottom of the lake - deposits of salts (mainly NaCl, KCl) and under them a layer of mineral hydrogen sulfide mud. Until 1882 on Elton was mining salt, in 1910 on its shores was founded the medical sanatorium "Elton" (moved to a new place in 1945). In 2001, the lake and adjacent areas of virgin steppes (106 thousand hectares) included in the natural park "Elton". (en)
