He is not to be confused with Carl Friedrich Schmidt, born 1832, the Baltic German geologist and botanist commonly referred to as the "Father of Estonian Geology", and incidentally was the first European to "discover" the Sakhalin Fir on the Russian island of Sakhalin in 1866. The standard author abbreviation C.F.Schmidt is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name. (en)
