After acquiring Rex Features and PremiumBeat in 2015, Shutterstock signed a partnership agreement with the Associated Press and most recently acquired Flashstock in 2017. It also has licensing deals with companies such as Penske Media Corporation. The company had over 100,000 contributors as of March 2016, with an "active customer base of 1.4 million people in 150 countries."

The latest events have shown that Shutterstock disrespects labor of its contributors, as the company announced even further cut of payouts to as low as 10 cents per photo. As a result, it started mass protests and portfolios shutdowns (by the mid of June, 2020 over 4500 contributors left), as well as contributors uniting into Contributor Coalition to fight for their rights. Shutterstock management still avoids dialogue with contributors and ignores all their demands.
